Sports Medicine

Throughout most games we encounter time outs, halftime, or that seventh inning stretch . We witness athletes leaving it all on the field, pouring out their heart and soul, and outwardly enduring the push and struggle with each fleeting tick of the clock. Sometimes pushing their bodies to the point of no return, all for the love of the sport.

Exercise is an integral part of healthy living, but sometimes athletes injure themselves while playing sports or exercising. Our staff, at Plateau Foot and Ankle Clinic, wants to keep you in the game for life. We understand that accidents can happen and we're here to help!

What is Sports Medicine?

Dr Khanh Le offers treatments that are geared towards sports medicine. This means that we are dedicated to treating and preventing athletic injuries to the lower extremities .

Athletes of all ages can agree that sports are hard on your feet and ankles! Accidents, poor training, and improper gear can all contribute to foot and ankle pain. Some individuals will even suffer from injury simply because they are not in shape. Other reasons for sports injury include lack of warming up, insufficient stretching or not having the right type of footwear.

Preventing Injury

Listen to your feet. Pain and discomfort is not normal and should raise awareness. In order to reduce your chances of developing foot and ankle injuries , stop at the first sign of pain or soreness and evaluate what you were doing when the pain started and if more activity is increasing the pain.  If so, stop and seek medical help, permanent damage can happen if you are unaware of how severe the injury is.

While exercising we spend countless hours on our feet turning, twisting, jumping, running and pushing ourselves – it is important not to push too hard or to the point of injury. Strengthening weakened muscles takes time, patience, and rest. For proper care, make an appointment with our office serving Sammamish, Issaquah, Bellevue, Kirkland and Redmond. Dr. Dr Khanh Le will help you achieve your sports goals.

Stretching is essential, not only in your legs and feet, but also your toes . By performing proper stretching, you will warm up key tissues and muscles.  This act prepares your limbs for the upcoming exercise or game, will increase your range of motion and flexibility, and help you preform at your best.

Equip yourself with the proper footwear for each activity. Finding the right pair of shoes or cleats will help prevent unnecessary damage to your feet. If you're not sure which pair is right for you, Dr. Dr Khanh Le will happily assess your feet and recommend a pair that is as unique as you are and will also help you decide if you need orthotics for additional stabilization.

Common Injuries

Depending on which athletic activity or exercise you are participating in, injuries can vary. Improper foot care during exercise contributes to more than 300 foot ailments. Visit our patient library to learn more about conditions and treatments.  Below are a few common injuries and ailments that are associated with a few different athletic activities.

Sports that require ample amounts of running can increase the pressure on your feet to almost three to four times your body weight. Runners typically experience ailments such as shin splints , Achilles tendonitis , blisters , and plantar fasciitis .

Athletes that partake in sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, or football are at high risk for ankle sprains. Because these activities often require a lot of quick stopping and turning motions, athletes may also experience fractures or bursitis.

Many individuals also suffer from athlete's foot. This foot fungus lives in dark, most areas, such as athletic shoes. Left untreated, you could have this spread and contribute the development of toenail fungus .

There is a tremendous amount of pressure placed on your feet during exercise. If you are injured, get the best care possible! Visit Dr Khanh Le's office and we'll get you back on your feet.
